Managing Anxiety

Hey, what’s up, hello! Just popping in to catch up since it’s been a while.  I started this creative space about a year and some change ago and I’ve been coming up with excuses ever since on why I don’t post anything. Mostly it’s because I was afraid to be judged for what I may or may not share here. But this is MY space and I’m just going to roll with wherever it takes me! I’ve done a few polls on the gram and a lot of y’all have asked me to share more about my personal life journey, so I figured I would just jump right into the thick of it and say I’m an anxious person haha. IG makes my life seem super active and upbeat and it definitely is, but I struggle with anxiety daily. Did you know that it’s actually the most common “mental health” problem? Now there are definitely people who require medication etc. so if you are one of those people, please continue whatever plan you are on. I’ve never had to be medicated for it so the tips and tricks below are only from my personal experience, but I figured I would share them for any other fellow anxious minds.

1. Workout

I cannot stress this enough! Working out releases endorphins. Endorphins are good for you and make you happy. It doesn’t get any more simple than that! I tend to choose high intensity workouts like Barry’s Bootcamp, Orange Theory etc. I also love going on runs outdoors (The Katy Trail here in Dallas is amazing), or I’ll go to spin class where the room is dark and the music/message really resonates. When I workout, it takes my mind off of anything I’m anxious or stressed about. It’s important to take at least one hour each day for yourself no matter how busy you are. Self-care baby!

2. Limit Caffeine Intake

This one is HARD. I love the taste of coffee, but caffeine actually intensifies anxiety! If you watch me drink coffee, you’ll see that I rarely finish it. I’ll drink about half and toss it. I like to choose green tea or black tea instead. Most times when I drink a whole coffee I get really shakey and wired and I don’t like that feeling. Then because I don’t like the feeling, I start to get all worked up and anxious lol. So Caffeine is  touch and go for me.

3. The Calm App

Y’all…. this app is amazing! There are so many series to choose from. They have meditation, sleep stories, music etc. I turn it on when my mind just won’t shut off. It works for me every single time, I’m not joking. I am not getting paid to promote them either, just sharing it because I really do love it! Also they have a Matthew McConaughey sleep story and his voice is like butter haha.

4. Alone Time

Taking time for yourself by yourself is the best thing you can do for your mind. Turn your phone on DND, put on some music or a podcast and chill out. Talk your mind through the anxious thoughts and what is causing you to feel that way. Then address it, remind yourself that you will get through it and then drop it! 

By no means am I an expert or therapist, just wanted to share a few things that work for me when my anxiety decides to creep up. Well that about does it, my life isn’t all rainbows and sunshine but neither is anyone else’s. I’m all about keeping it real these days!
